Moving to Sydney: my (visa) story

The story of how I ended up moving to this beautiful city begins in 2009, which is when I met my now-partner Ty while travelling in the UK.

For the next five years, we were in a long-distance relationship, travelling between Germany/Switzerland and Australia, visiting each other for sometimes weeks, and sometimes even for a few months at a time. During this time, I visited Australia several times, and I also spent a couple of months living in Melbourne on a Working Holiday Visa.

As our relationships evolved, so did my love for Australia and in 2014, I decided it’s time to make it official and move to “The Land Down Under”.

I did so, at first, on a Student Visa as I had enrolled in a Master’s degree at UNSW. I’ll write a post about how I chose my course, and my experience as a student in Australia soon.

I applied for the Defacto Partner Visa (subclass 820) while I was still enrolled in uni (February 2015), and the visa was granted in May 2016. I will become eligible to apply for a permanent Partner Visa (subclass 801) in February 2017.

I will write detailed posts about my experience applying for the Partner Visa, as well as the ins and outs of Bridging Visas A and B in the coming 1-2 weeks, so watch this space čÖé

My hope is that this information will help newbie applicants with their (permanent) move to Australia.

Thanks for reading!
